How tall they are when we deliver
The question we get most by email is how big a size really is. These are typical heights at delivery, soil to top, for the plants in stock now. Every plant is a little different.
| Plant | 1 gal | 3/5 gal | 10/15 gal | 24 in / 25 gal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green Hopseed | 1 to 1.5 ft | 1.5 to 2 ft | 3.5 to 5 ft | 4.5 to 6 ft |
| Purple Hopseed | 8 to 16 in | 2.5 to 3.5 ft | 5 to 8 ft | 6 to 9 ft |
| Dwarf Myrtle | 6 to 10 in | 1.5 to 2.5 ft | 2 to 3 ft | not stocked |
| Ficus Column | not stocked | 3 to 4.5 ft | 5 to 7 ft | 7 to 10 ft |
Heights are estimated from photos of our current stock and size norms for each plant, the same numbers shown on each size button. Sizes can sell out.
How far apart to plant
| Plant | Full screen fast | Standard | 40 ft fence needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green or Purple Hopseed | 4 ft apart | 5 ft apart | 10 plants at 4 ft, 8 at 5 ft |
| Dwarf Myrtle | 2 ft apart | 3 ft apart | 20 plants at 2 ft, 14 at 3 ft |
| Ficus Column | 4 ft apart | 6 ft apart | 10 at 4 ft, 7 at 6 ft |
Each of these product pages has a "How many do I need?" planner. Type your fence length and it does the math. Spacing does not change with container size.

What customers ask us, answered
How tall is a 1 gallon or 5 gallon Green Hopseed when it shows up?
About 1 to 1.5 ft for 1 gallon and 1.5 to 2 ft for 3/5 gallon. A 10/15 gallon is about 3.5 to 5 ft. See the size table above.
Should I buy small plants or big ones?
Most of our customers buy 1 gallon or 3/5 gallon and plant more of them. Green Hopseed grows fast in Phoenix, so small plants fill in. Buy 10/15 gallon if you need height the first year.
Do I need drip irrigation?
For the plants to establish well, yes, and our plant warranties require a drip emitter at the base of each plant. Hand watering is not covered. Drip guidance is on each product page.
Where do you leave the plants?
Reply to your delivery confirmation email with where you want them. If they go behind a gate, include your gate code.
When is the best time to plant a privacy hedge in Phoenix?
Fall, October and November. The soil is still warm and the air is cooler, so roots get months to grow before summer. Spring, February to April, is second best.
Can you plant them for me?
Yes. Add installation at checkout and our crew plants them, priced by size.
