First, Read the Pattern Before You Reach for Anything

The single biggest mistake I see is folks grabbing fertilizer or cranking the water the second they spot yellow. Slow down. Where the yellowing shows up tells you almost everything. Look at which leaves are affected, and look at the veins.
- Newest leaves at the tips. When the youngest growth goes yellow while the veins stay green, you are usually looking at an iron or micronutrient issue, very common in our alkaline desert soil.
- Oldest leaves at the bottom. When the lowest, oldest leaves yellow first and the plant looks tired all over, that often points to nitrogen hunger or, more often in Phoenix, a watering problem.
- All over at once. Sudden, widespread yellow after a heat spike or a transplant usually means stress, root trouble, or too much water sitting around the roots.
- Bleached or tan patches on sun-facing sides. That is not classic yellowing at all. That is sunburn, and it gets fixed differently.
Chlorosis: Yellow Leaves, Green Veins
This is the classic Phoenix yellow. Chlorosis means the leaf is not making enough chlorophyll, so it pales out while the little veins stay green, giving you that netted, web-like look. Our native soil runs alkaline, often above pH 8, and that high pH locks up iron and manganese so roots cannot grab them, even when the nutrients are physically present in the dirt.
Plants that fuss about this in our area include citrus, gardenia, photinia, and some non-native ornamentals that wish they lived somewhere with sweeter soil. Tougher desert-adapted plants like palo verde, mesquite, and Texas sage almost never show it.
- Short-term fix. A chelated iron product (look for EDDHA on the label, it holds up best in high pH) applied to the soil per the directions will green things up in a few weeks.
- Long-term fix. Add organic matter like compost, mulch the root zone, and avoid overwatering, since soggy soil makes iron uptake even worse.
- Skip this trap. Do not just dump nitrogen on a chlorotic plant. Nitrogen pushes new growth that comes in just as yellow, and you have not solved a thing.
Overwatering: The Number One Yellow-Maker in the Desert
Here is the one that surprises folks. In a place this dry, more plants go yellow from too much water than too little. When soil stays wet, roots cannot breathe, they start to rot, and a drowning root system cannot move nutrients up the plant. The result looks deceptively like thirst: yellow, droopy, sad.
How to tell it is overwatering and not drought? Stick your finger or a long screwdriver two to three inches into the soil. If it comes out cool and damp and your plant is still yellowing, you are watering too often. Wet soil plus yellow leaves plus a mushy or sour smell at the base equals back off the water now.
- The fix. Water less frequently but more deeply. Let the top few inches dry out between waterings.
- Check your drainage. Plants sitting in a low spot or heavy clay that holds water are at high risk. Amend or relocate if you can.
- Container plants. Make sure pots actually drain, and never let a pot sit in a saucer full of water in our heat.
Underwatering and Heat Stress
Of course, plants do also go yellow from genuine thirst, especially newly planted ones and thirstier non-natives during a Phoenix summer. The tell here is dry soil down deep, crispy leaf edges, and leaves that yellow and then go brown and brittle rather than soft and mushy.
During our hottest stretches, even a well-established plant can yellow a little from pure heat stress as it sheds leaves to conserve water. If the soil is moist at depth and the plant is otherwise healthy, a bit of seasonal yellowing in July is often just the plant being smart. Keep a steady deep-watering rhythm and resist the urge to drown it.
Sunburn Versus True Yellowing
Not all pale leaves are nutrient or water problems. If you see bleached white, tan, or papery patches only on the sides facing the afternoon sun, that is sunscald, not chlorosis. It hits plants that were grown under shade at the nursery, recent transplants, and thin-barked young trees hardest. The fix is shade cloth and smart placement, not fertilizer. If it slides in easy and comes out damp, your problem is almost certainly too much water, not too little, and the cure is to water less often. Frequently Asked Questions
Will yellow leaves turn green again?
Usually not. A leaf that has gone fully yellow has lost its chlorophyll and will not re-green. What you are aiming for is healthy new growth coming in green. If the fresh leaves emerge green, your fix is working, and you can trim off the worst of the old yellow ones once new growth is established.
How do I know if it is iron deficiency or just thirst?
Look at the veins. Iron chlorosis leaves the veins green while the leaf tissue between them turns yellow, and it shows on the newest leaves first. Thirst tends to yellow and brown the whole leaf, edges first, and the soil will be dry deep down. Iron problems often happen even in moist soil.
Should I fertilize a yellowing plant right away?
Not until you know the cause. If the soil is soggy, fertilizer can make root stress worse. If it is sunburn, fertilizer does nothing. Diagnose first. When nutrients truly are the issue, a chelated iron product for chlorosis or a balanced feeding for general hunger is the move, applied in cooler weather, not the peak of summer.
My citrus tree gets yellow leaves every year. Is that normal?
Citrus is famous for it here because it dislikes our alkaline soil and shows iron and zinc deficiencies readily. Mild, vein-pattern yellowing on new growth is common and manageable with chelated iron and a citrus-specific fertilizer applied at the right times of year. Widespread yellowing with leaf drop, though, usually means a watering issue worth correcting.
Can too much sun alone cause yellow leaves?
Intense sun usually causes bleaching and tan scald patches rather than even yellowing, and it shows up only on the sun-facing side. If your whole plant is evenly yellow, look at water and nutrients first. If only the exposed leaves are pale and crispy, that is a sun and placement issue.
