Description:

Coral Honeysuckle is a North American native vine, appreciated for its striking flowers and its value to wildlife. It's a popular choice in gardens for its ornamental appeal and ease of care.

The most distinctive feature of Coral Honeysuckle is its flowers. The blooms are tubular, bright red or coral, and they appear in clusters from spring to early summer. These vivid flowers are not only visually appealing but also attract hummingbirds and butterflies, adding life and color to the garden.

In addition to its attractive blooms, Coral Honeysuckle has oval to oblong leaves that are blue-green in color. The leaves are semi-evergreen to evergreen in milder climates, providing year-round interest. Unlike some other honeysuckle varieties, Coral Honeysuckle is not invasive and is generally well-behaved in the garden.

This vine is versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes. It's ideal for growing on trellises, fences, arbors, and pergolas, where it can add vertical interest. It can also be used as a ground cover in areas where you want to control erosion.

Coral Honeysuckle thrives in well-drained soil and is relatively drought-tolerant once established. It prefers a sunny location but can also tolerate partial shade. Pruning can be done after flowering to keep the plant tidy and promote new growth.

Overall, Coral Honeysuckle is valued for its ornamental flowers, ability to attract wildlife, and its non-invasive growth habit. It's an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add a native vine to their landscape that is both beautiful and beneficial to the local ecosystem.

Three Timbers Installation Guide (Feel Free to Follow): Coral Honeysuckle

Planting Guide:

  • Location: Full sun to partial shade (at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal blooming)
  • Soil: Well-drained, loamy or sandy soil (slightly acidic to neutral soil preferred)
  • Spacing: Space plants 4-6 feet apart to allow for optimal growth and air circulation
  • Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as the root ball, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface
  • Support: Coral Honeysuckle is a climbing vine that requires a trellis, fence, or wall to grow upward

Watering Guide:

Watering After Planting:

  • Initial Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting to saturate the root ball and surrounding soil
  • Frequency: Water every 2-3 days for the first 2-3 weeks to help establish the root system
  • Watering Amount: Provide 1 inch of water per session for deep watering around the roots

When is the Plant Established?

  • Timeframe: Coral Honeysuckle is considered established after 3-4 months when the roots have spread into the surrounding soil

Watering Once Established:

  • Summer: Water every 7-10 days during the hotter months. If temperatures exceed 100°F, increase watering to every 5-7 days. Provide 1.5-2 inches of water per session.
  • Winter: Water every 3-4 weeks during the cooler months, depending on rainfall.

Drip Irrigation Setup:

  • Placement of Emitters: Place the drip emitters 12-18 inches away from the base of the plant
  • Flow Rate: Use emitters with a flow rate of 1-2 gallons per hour for slow, deep watering
  • Number of Emitters: 1 emitter per plant for even water distribution
  • Adjusting Frequency: In the summer, increase watering to every 5-7 days. In winter, reduce to every 3-4 weeks
