Description:
The Cardon Grande, scientifically known as Pachycereus pringlei, is an impressive and iconic cactus species that can thrive in the Arizona landscape, particularly in regions with a hot and arid climate. Known for its towering height, massive trunk, and majestic presence, the Cardon Grande is a symbol of desert grandeur, resilience, and the unique beauty of arid landscapes.

One of the most distinctive features of the Cardon Grande is its remarkable size, making it one of the largest cactus species in the world. These giants can reach astounding heights of up to 60 feet or more, with a thick and columnar trunk that can have a diameter of several feet. The cactus is typically blue-green in color and has a ribbed texture, which adds to its visual appeal.

Cardon Grande cacti are well-adapted to Arizona's hot and arid climate, thriving in full sun and requiring well-drained soil. Their ability to store water in their massive trunks makes them exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, making them an ideal choice for water-wise landscaping and xeriscaping.

Maintenance of the Cardon Grande is relatively low, as these cacti require little attention once established. Regular watering is not necessary, as they can survive long periods without rainfall. Occasional pruning may be required to remove dead or damaged growth or to shape the cactus if needed.

The towering presence of the Cardon Grande makes it a spectacular and commanding addition to desert gardens and landscape design. Its massive size, unique appearance, and low-maintenance nature make it a valuable addition to gardens, adding both visual majesty and a sense of desert authenticity to the landscape.

In summary, the Cardon Grande is a symbol of desert grandeur and resilience, making it a captivating and drought-tolerant choice for Arizona landscapes, especially in regions with a hot and arid climate. Its towering height, massive trunk, and low-maintenance nature make it a valuable addition to gardens, adding both visual majesty and a touch of desert authenticity to the landscape.

Planting Guide:

  • Location: Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth)
  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy or rocky soil (slightly acidic to neutral soil preferred)
  • Spacing: Space plants 15-20 feet apart for their mature size
  • Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as the root ball, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface
  • Support: No staking required; Cardon Grande Cactus is a tall, columnar cactus that grows upright and is resilient to wind

Watering Guide:

Watering After Planting:

  • Initial Watering: Water thoroughly immediately after planting to saturate the root ball and surrounding soil
  • Frequency: Water every 3-4 days for the first 2-3 weeks to help establish the root system
  • Watering Amount: Provide 2-3 inches of water per session, ensuring deep watering around the roots

When is the Plant Established?

  • Timeframe: Cardon Grande Cactus is considered established after 6-8 months when the roots have spread into the surrounding soil and the cactus begins showing consistent new growth

Watering Once Established:

  • Summer: Water every 14-21 days during the hotter months. If temperatures exceed 100°F, increase watering to every 10-14 days. Provide 2-3 inches of water per session.
  • Winter: Water every 4-6 weeks during the cooler months, depending on rainfall.

Drip Irrigation Setup:

  • Placement of Emitters: Place the drip emitters 18-24 inches away from the base of the cactus to ensure deep watering
  • Flow Rate: Use emitters with a flow rate of 2-4 gallons per hour for slow, deep watering
  • Number of Emitters: 1-2 emitters per plant based on cactus size
  • Adjusting Frequency: In summer, increase watering frequency to every 10-14 days to ensure hydration. In winter, reduce watering to every 4-6 weeks or adjust based on rainfall
